Point Defiance AAZK - Committee Overviews:

Community Involvement

Chair oversees all AAZK activities centering on communication with the general public and PDZA staff via the chapter website, social media (Facebook, Instagram, etc.), National Zoo Keeper Week, and miscellaneous outreach opportunities. Committee members of Community Involvement focus on at least one subcategory of the following:

Website & Social Media:  Members update the chapter website and social media in an eye-catching and professional manner and can make changes and updates at Admin level.  Each member may spend a few minutes a week to several hours at a time depending on the project at hand.

Community Outreach:  Members promote AAZK usually via display booths during unique events (such as Career Day, Member's Night, etc.).  This involves a few hours every few months or so.

National Zoo Keeper Week:  Celebrated annually during the second week of July, members help PDZA staff feel appreciated through activities, gifts, etc.  Each participating member should expect to be busy in the weeks leading up to this week.

Professional Development

Chair gathers ideas and interests of workshop topics that enhance skills of staff and volunteers at PDZA.  Committee members help plan, organize, and promote each event.  There are on average 2-4 events per year, with a few hours being spent to prepare for each event by each member.

Bowling For Rhinos (BFR)

Chairs plan a national, annual fundraiser.  Committee members help plan promotional events, raffle/auction items, and the actual event itself.  Each committee member can expect to work anywhere between a few hours to many hours spread out over months of planning depending on their own level of involvement.  All help is appreciated!

Party For Polar Bears!

This is one of our biggest annual conservation fundraisers. Its format is similar to BFR and committee members help find auction items and deliver auction items as well as helping plan the in person event and event set up.  Each committee member can expect to work anywhere between a few hours to many hours spread out over months of planning depending on their own level of involvement.

Drinking For Conservation (DFC)

Chair communicates with vendors and coordinates each monthly fundraiser.  The fundraisers are usually for non-profit conservation organizations that are outside of AAZK.  Committee members must expect to spend between a few and several hours coordinating, advertising, and talking with event goers with a donation box in hand.

FUNdraising

While sometimes overlooked, this committee may be the most important!  Chair oversees various means of general fundraising.  The money raised through this committee goes toward general funding, which involves conservation, conference trips, and miscellaneous spending of chapter funds.  Members may focus on at least one subcategory of the following:

Takeovers:  Members volunteer 3-4 hours of their time at a restaurant (usually Round Table Pizza).  This happens every few months and is pretty fun!

Photo Booth:  Members volunteer 3-4 hours of their time helping to take pictures of guests with a member dressed in a polar bear costume.  This has previously taken place during Zoolights, but may be set up at any time of year.

RedBubble:  This website helps us sell Point Defiance AAZK merch. Help with this subcommittee includes uploading photos and graphics and applying them to merch through the RedBubble website.
